Just near The Mermaid Inn (a favourite haunt of my uncle Leslie's),
The Roads and Samson Island.
Samson and its twin hills is known as the setting in Sir Walter Besant's novel Armorel of Lyonesse. My uncle Leslie (well known on St Mary's) had a partner named Armorel (Mel) Pender. The island was once inhabited by about 50 people. Remains of old cottages exist, alongside the ancient sepulchral barrows and and the kistvaen

If I remember rightly, at busy times Les would team up with old Clifford at the bar. If there were an event at the Olympics for speed of service and pint pulling the gold medal would have been theirs every time.
 
You remember rightly ::6: When my father, and two of his brothers got together ... anything could and did happen; Uncle Basil and Uncle Les were the very spirit of life. Sadly missed.
